French Essence (the book not the blog)… for you

Someone asked me if writing a book and the subsequent publication was like giving birth; yes, I think it is. A new book is just like a new baby – expecting the arrival, waiting for what seems like forever and thinking that you know each and all of the peculiarities and the distinguishing characteristics. When you actually meet face to face it is strangely something of a surprise, a very happy and emotional surprise.

French Essence has been two years in the making and I don’t think a day has passed where I have not thought about the words or the images. Since conception it has occupied pretty much my every waking moment. I have had the great pleasure to work with Carla Coulson again; her magical touch has captured in photographs all that I see and love about life in France. The words that I have written are heartfelt and about the people and places that I hold dear.
This week I am giving away two copies to celebrate the publication of French Essence. To enter please leave a comment and subscribe to my blog here. If you are already a subscriber you will automatically be entered to win and the winners will be announced next week…xv

  2. How exciting to have a new baby to nurture. Not quite sure you should be giving it away when you talk about it in those glowing terms. But then I guess we all have moments when we'd love to give our babies away! Congratulations, I hope we get to see copies on the shelves of Dymocks or Borders in the not too distant future.

  50. Meaghan Smith says:

    Dear Vicki,

Congratulations on your new book. I have a copy of "My French Life" and love it.

I have been meaning to email you for some time now. I live in Melb ourne and like you, love France. I was recently made redundant from a job I had for 23 years. Every day since I finished my job, I have considered booking a flight to Paris. Since my first trip 2 years ago (for my 40th birthday) France is somewhere I almost feel homesick for. I adore everything about it. It feels like where I should be. If it wasn't for my sisters, nieces and nephew, I would consider moving tomorrow. France is about everything that resondates with me. Beautiful architecture, amazing food and wine, style, beauty, art, culture – everything that inspires me. During my 40th birthday trip I stayed at Graveson and spent the majority of my time eating, shopping and exploring St Remy. So when I receive your newsletter, it gives me a wonderful warm feeling of lovely memories. I particularly love your articles about French style and the quaint little shops in St Remy. Thank you so much. I hope to return very soon. Warm regards, Meaghan Smith

  52. Vicki: Congratulations!! I'm almost as excited as you are!! :-)

Do not post this comment, please. I tried to write you via your Vicki Archer website contact info but none of the links worked.

Just letting you know the "its" in the first sentence shouldn't have an apostrophe. Not trying to nitpick but since you're announcing your new book here, I thought you might want to correct it.

Best of luck with the new book! I'll be happy to add a link to my site. xo -Lori

  53. Barbara says:

  69. Chania Allen says:

I purchased your first book "My French Life" this Spring. It was one of those books that you put aside until you find the perfect time and place to peruse it. I knew exactly where I would indulge myself. I put it away to take to my favourite place, our tiny cottage on Georgian Bay in Canada. This is my alter-ego "other place". It was a few weeks before we opened the cottage after Winter. Our first morning there, I woke early as usual, made a huge latte and settled on my big, comfy sofa with a pillow and blanket with the Spring sunshine pouring in and read your delighful book cover to cover. This was a wonderful, much anticipated treat. I particularly love your attachment to the land, the trees and the history and feel of the house. Most of all, your story of this house had a "humble" approach which makes it a dream all readers could enjoy, no matter our circumstances or budgets. Truly refreshing. I enjoy your blog very much, especially loving your posts on confidence in women. Good luck with your newest book.

Dear Vicki – you legend you!!! I'm so excited to read this & of course Son #5 will be too. That means another trip in to see Mandy @ Dymocks in Rundle Mall in disguise – oh he'll be over the moon, NOT! However, this time I think he needs to hand the task of buying Mum Vicki's new book for Chrissie over to one of his 4 brothers. Gee it would save a lot of angst amongst the brothers if I just 'happened' to be the lucky Winner of your give-away. Either that or a fast on-line purchase I reckon.

Anyways dear girl, the very warmest congrats on the new arrival, hope Mr. FF has got something very special in mind to celebrate your success with.
    Love Millie ^_^

  199. Tosh says:

We live in the Adelaide Hills in South Australia in an old stone home we bought originally as a ruin. Near our home, in a beautiful little town called Strathalbyn, is the Argus House cafe where my sister-in-law and I have lunch together about once a week. A few months ago I was there alone and found My French Life among the newspapers and Swedish cookbooks. It is so well thumbed the binding has pulled apart exposing the stitching, some pages are stuck together, some have been unsuccessfully separated, and some are even missing. At first it was the renovation of a ruined home that interested me because it mirrored our experience – albeit with local differences. Succeeding luncheons introduced me to your life and this struck a chord not for the differences, but for the similarity in contentment. And so beautifully photographed. That sent me to the net to buy my own, whole, copy and that search took me to your blog. Lovely. I look forward to French Essence as much as I look forward to lunch at the Argus. Thank you.

Well done Vicki, you had the courage of your convictions to write ANOTHER award winning book! What a lady you must be! But like baby birth pains, one forgets the tribulations and only remembers the pleasures. May the painful memories of the birth of this babe be forgotten soon, as you baske in the afterglow of another great creation. Can't wait to see it.
