Oh dear…we opened our boxes of macaroons carefully brought back from Paris this year and stowed in the way back of the refrigerator. They were stale and tasteless! What a waste. We were trying to give our relatives a taste of this delectable treat.
I'm in France about four or five times per year ( I'm married into a French family, so this just sorta happens), and I've just returned from a 12-day stay over Christmas.
One of this year's surprises was discovering that one of the cousins took a couple of classes to learn how to bake macaroons, and everyone got a boxful for New Year's.
I'll emphasize that this perfectly jolly, married-with-three-children, guy is also about 6'5" and built like a linebacker and spends half his weekends playing intramural rugby. Not exactly the sort one might automatically assume would be fussing over macaroons.
Still? His were wonderful and duly exclaimed-over by everyone….particularly the old ladies (including the 88 year old former nanny).
So, I gather macaroons can't be THAT hard to make. I plan to learn how, and I expect you could, also.
They're certainly a welcome change from the usual, predictable range of Christmas cookies (of which I've got about six new bags and boxes from neighbors…in my freezer as I type)
sweet vicki… i have so enjoyed our little friendship this year and know it is just the beginning… i am coming to france (will let you know) and would love to find a wonderful little spot to stay in st remy… maybe you can suggest a place.. i want to get it lined up… i need to check into antique markets to come at the best time… and my boyfriend has never been… i am so excited to share it with him…
i am beyond thrilled for you for all you have accomplished and i know there is so much more to come…
