The French seem to be the experts when it comes to a dash of red… especially in the south. I came across this vignette as I browsed the morning market in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon… floral curtains, an enamel coffee pot, checked tea towels… the sweetest little jewellery drawers covered in toile… and red embroidered napkins… They were all arranged so beautifully for sale… the drum at the back just added that extra cachet…
This small village, across the Rhone from the old town of Avignon, holds a brocante in the car park most Saturday mornings… It had the best selection of collectibles I have seen for a long time… great furniture, lights, linens, china and glassware… Every weekend is different, with vendors changing constantly… and some weekends are bigger and brighter than others… but it is definitely worth a visit if you love a flea market like I do…
Another dash of red for this weekend… that I can’t wait to read is… Paris I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down… it sounds, fun, light and just what we like… all about living in Paris… and making it work… xv

Dear Vicki
I can’t wait to visit the Brocantes in Burgundy in a couple of weeks.
Where my daughter lives, the weekly market wasn’t so good – hopefully it has changed and now has a vendor with some interesting old wares such as you’ve shown me!
Just done a post today and made mention of your delicous GIVEAWAY!!!

Love all that beautiful red! Gorgeous photo Vicki!
Vicki,
You always manage to find such beautiful little treasures! We will be in Paris the first part of July and I hope the perfect brocante. I will need to look up this town and see where it is in relation to where we will be. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Vicki. I love “French Red”; there is no other color that adds that special bright energy to a space. I’ve been debating whether to paint a highly carved pedestal table a “Chinese Red” or a “French Red”–I think that you have made up my mind. I am so happy that bright saturated colors are returning to the “in” design palette here in the USA. Every room needs a touch of black or red to make it perfect. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day (do they celebrate it today in France, or on May 10th as in Spain and Mexico?).
Mary
I love the red and yes the French are experts in the use of color, actually I consider the French and the Italians as having a magical intuition about color, textiles, shape, all things esthetic. Where else can you go and buy mustard or fruit preserves (moutard et confitures) where the experience is artful and engrossing and you somehow feel better for it? That’s magic!
Love the arrangement of selections in the window…ahh missing France terribly.
I so love this look…I’m so drawn to the vintage french red/tan color combination and it’s captured perfectly. This Moter’s Day I’m surrounding myself with the things I love that make me content…Happy Mother’s Day!
Love your blog, books and website. I love having the link to the Annick Goutal perfumes – they are hard to find and my favorite is Eau de Sud. Yours is the only blog I read religiously and I love the pictures and book suggestion. Missing France, must return soon!
Phyllis
Thanks for the book recommendation – just looking for my next read!

My guest room is done up with red toile de jouy and these treasures would fit in perfectly.
Still need to find some red ballet flats…red is so cheerful.
Dear Vicki,
Your new website is divine…. with all the elegance of a French life! C’est magnifique!
I love your photo, there is something special about the muted lighting.
A great still life.
I love poking around in all these places, and see what you’ve found. I would have bought the entire stack, just because I am mad for orderly stacks of stuff. Happy Mother’s Day, darling Vicki…
Oh my, what a delight! There’s nothing like a bit of red to ‘pop’ a scene and this is such a delightful arrangement of texture as well as colour.
I’ve just added that book to my Amazon basket, it looks perfect for me
Wish I could add that lovely coffee pot too!
Have a lovely week Vicki XX
Oooh.. I love that little red jewellery box.. its says.. ‘Little boxes, little boxes.. .. there’s a pink one, a green one.. a RED one.. oh thanks for the memory of that song Vicki.. lovely post x j
The weather is warming here in Vancouver and it is our first picnic evening. Red check tea towels are my favourite things to use in the picnic basket. Tonight they will be unwrapped at Kitsilano Beach to offer up a fresh loaf of pecan apricot bread, an assortment of cheeses and wine glasses…..heaven with good company and the sunset!
These items are beautiful! Perhaps the French love red so much because it’s a beautiful color for spring picnics? While in France, it’s almost a crime to eat indoors if the weather is beautiful.
This is such a great shot. As my boyfriend says, you can’t have it all but I can’t imagine how you resist buying everything!
I guess the next best is having your camera at all times. Especially with what YOU see on a daily basis.
And a picture lasts longer anyway and can be shared!
Oooh…………this photo looks perfect on your polished new site Vicki! I must go shopping there one day, we really don’t have good flea markets here in Canada. Thank you for your lovely comment too, it was a perfect grad day for all of is. Much love XO
Vicki a lovely vignette of French in Red!! Adore the selection of special pieces.

Ahhhh…my favorite color! Beautiful finds! Wish I were there to enjoy all the glorious pops of red in person. Thank you for sharing with us, as always! A breath of fresh, French air!
I love going to the brocante markets … this post is very alluring. It makes me want to be in France today, poking around for treasures. Your blog is fabulous!
The teapot is extraordinary! What a fun, bright addition to the kitchen table.
Happy to see that you shared about the French use of Red. Too often the focus is on blues and yellows but Reds do show up as your post points out.
Red is my favorite color and you have chosen some beauties in the photo!
I love red checked tea towels. When I was pressing mine this morning I thought that they needed a bit of embroidery, but I was not sure what. Seeing this picture inspires me to just add a bit of red to make them special.
I used to have a 100% Fire King Jadeite green kitchen. But then I got a red Le Creuset pan for Christmas, and then another one the next year, and those beautifuls are just screaming out for some additional red! So I’ve obliged with vintage rose napkins as curtains and red-lidded jars and some other little things here and there.
But those red and white tea towels would add a nice touch!
I simply want to say I’m newbie to weblog and actually savored your website. Almost certainly I’m planning to bookmark your website . You certainly come with good article content. Many thanks for revealing your blog.
