French Style at the Flea Market…

Many of the vendors in French brocantes are self made stylists. They have goods to sell so displaying them well is their number one priority… Like this console above… sitting outside… with the sun beating down… yet the ensemble was very much complete… I loved how the shutters became the backdrop and the old Persian carpet the flooring… Looking at this vignette I immediately felt as though I were in a hallway…

Lace and more lace… not intentionally styled… stacked side by side… but the pop of green caught my eye… and the textures and shades of white and cream… I would love that box of trims… just as they are… in my bedroom… a little feminine fantasy…

Rustic and rugged… this old cart and what I think may have been a milk container, took my eye… for the composition of colours more than anything… thrown together… the browns and the oranges… accidental harmony…

This industrial piece… sitting alone… with a single photograph propped up… struck a chord… maybe it was originally from a post office… I don’t know… but I imagined it in a country bathroom filled with perfumes and potions… or sitting in a kitchen displaying colourful cups and saucers…

and this velvet… ‘Jacques Garcia’ style chair haphazardly sharing with a floral toleware light… again the colours and the textures appealed to me…

Sometimes the thrown together, flea market style, is my most favourite French way of all… xv

    Vicki ma belle!!!
Jacques Garcia style is UP MY ALLEY. I too love the TEXTURES of velvet, chipped paint, metal, paper…etc. These textures suggest age and history and this is how I love to surround myself in my brick French style cottage!

Merci ma chère for coming to visit with me! Oh how lovely if you participated in the Paris link party. You are the PERFECT candidate!

    Be well, Anita

  4. Gorgeous….and agree its often the mixes in both styles, periods and textures that make the most interesting and eye catching spaces. Thanks for sharing the beautiful highlights!

  5. I adore the shelving and would love this in my home somewhere, anywhere. Thanks for sharing. G.x

  6. Oh, just love it all. I would be going silly crazy at these flea markets. Everything here is so NEW that it is not easy just to see ‘antique’ items…

I adore the french for all the style and grace in which they respect style.
The other evening – I attended an event at ABC Home and there were lots of lovely things on display….it reminded me of France.

  8. Beautiful post, Vicki. The first image is stunning, and the trim is so beautiful. A couple of pieces remind me of the French lace I am collecting for my grandchildren’s christening gowns. The industrial piece reminds me of a mail bin in an office.
I hope that you week is going well.
    Happy Wednesday.

  10. Vicki,
The ‘style’ gets me every time! I can’t tell you the number of items I’ve dragged home due to a fabulous little vignette the item was situated in. Very pretty, wish I were shopping in the South of France this week. :-)

  11. That console! *thud, picking myself up from the floor* And the color and texture of the crapaud–perrrfect for me, thank you very much!

But I especially love the idea of using the postal rack put to great use displaying perfume bottles and small bud vases–lovely…

The French have the flea market presentation wrapped up! Displays you could easily move from site to home and have the perfect room. I love this first photograph, so simple, so French yet at home in a formal decor. On my trips to France one of my favorite pastimes was finding the local flea market in small towns. Loved your peek from the market.
Love the new look of your blog.

Hi Vicki, I love the first photo with the “painted” console–of course, I would subtract the carved embellishment. I wish that I could find several of these pieces here in the US as I could sell them so quickly. Great lines!! Be well. Mary

  25. Patricia Kimber says:

I love the beautiful finds in the markets. Why are things so affordable over there and so expensive in Australia. I live in the Barossa Valley SA and even though it is very “french” with the vineyards and eateries I still love reading French Essence.
