Patrick Dempsey’s Malibu Home

This Frank Gehry designed home in Malibu was originally an artist’s loft built in the late 60’s, early 70’s and is currently inhabited by Patrick Dempsey and his family.

I use the term “currently inhabited” because Patrick describes himself as a “caretaker” of the house and explains “You have to be very careful to nurture it and sustain it and hand it on to someone else eventually.” I love this philosophy, and the fact that he acknowledges how fortunate he is to live there.

As the house wasn’t really designed for a family, modifications were made and Patrick admits it was challenging trying to keep the balance right for the home. “You want it to be comfortable and you want it to be warm…this is a family home and we want it to be inviting and casual and relaxed so you’re not uptight about things.”

Modern homes can have a tendency to look fabulous but sterile, very much “less is more.” A quality design must fit the owner’s needs and I think, in this case, the transformation to family friendly home has been beautifully considered and superbly executed. xannabelle

Thank yoouu!! This clip about architecture was a shot in the arm for me this morning. Your blogs have rescued me on several occasions. It just goes to show how civilised and nuturing good design can be for the human, how dignifying. I shall watch this clip carefully a few times over, as I am putting together design ideas for my forever home. How hard it is, a challenge thrown down to the will of self and the disciplines of the mind to dig DEEP, in order to unearth the pure and essential that is right for the individual soul when deciding a house design. How does one live in this technological age? Consider the design choices available….Are all correct or authentic for living? Or are certain options unhealthy for humanity in terms of being too ideological or thematic, removing us from the engagement of our 5 senses, which is what brings us joy. Is there a line of distinction between the need for humans to create and embellish and expresss, and a coverup of whats really there in terms of natural environment? I think there is there an ageless underlying wisdom that one should employ in use of natural elements: air, light, fire/heat, water, space. The icing on the proverbial cake is to see a family, is the case Mr Dempsey’s, living and interacting with each other and the wonderful natural world and its elements so as to bring ease, contentment and quiet joy. That’s good design in my books. I look forward to what else you can find for us to view.
