Savage Beauty, Alexander McQueen

“It was about trying to trap something that wasn’t conventionally beautiful to show that beauty comes from within.” – Alexander McQueen

Savage Beauty pays homage to the late Alexander McQueen who’s designs have captivated and moved audiences around the world. The exhibition initially opened in 2011 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and has now come to the V&A in London, becoming the first and largest collection of McQueen’s work to be shown in Europe.

McQueen’s words are displayed across the walls, giving an insight into his influences and creative drive. Claire Wilcox curated the exhibition which features beautifully designed sets by McQueen’s creative director Sam Gainsbury as well as striking lighting and sound design.

Taking you into McQueen’s dream world, this theatrical exhibition is a visual treat from beginning to end. Plunged into darkness and encapsulated by dramatic music, it showcases different aspects of his work in various themed rooms, focusing on his romantic style but with a discomforting element of death.
