Had you forgotten the tweed jacket?
I am guilty of losing the tweed to the simple wools, cotton and cashmere but after another The Crown binge watch I think tweed is very worthy of our attention.
Not all tweeds are those I would include in my wardrobe – but the “today’s” version is a fabulous wear with many of our ever-faithful essentials. The shorter tweed jacket is a brilliant overlay for a simple dress or easily gives an edge to tailored pants and tees underneath. A longer style is a valuable addition for casual outfits.
For me, there have always been two styles of tweeds.
The Chanel style of tweed jacket and what I call the “Equestrian” tweed jacket. I like a mix somewhere in-between and I prefer the grey shades over the browns and caramels. It’s not that I don’t like this particular palette; they aren’t as flattering with my grey hair.
Tweed jackets are often shorter in style than their companion blazers. I often think the classic style tweed jacket is like a grownup version of a cardigan but easier to wear and no risk of looking “dowdy”. Cardigans can be tricky that way – I do wear them and like them but I have so often got them wrong.
A longer style blazer in less dramatic tweed can be a wonderful alternative to a plain fabric. Think white tee, jeans and soft tweed blazer with a pair of sneakers, mules or heels if heading out. This is such an easy and very wearable outfit. I like the idea of adding a large rectangular scarf and wearing it like Vanessa Kirby who plays Princess Margaret in The Crown. As an aside, she is truly sensational in this role and the wardrobe selections enviable. I would very much like to “steal her style”.
Here at VA we have decided tweed is on, starting here. xv
