Where To Spend, Where To Save: The Shirt Dress

SPEND AND SAVE ALTERNATIVES TO STYLING A CLASSIC.

Keeping up with evolving trends and creating a fashionable wardrobe to reflect your style demands time and interest. Achieving the desired look doesn’t always have to involve high costs.

The VA girls have been Spring Shopping and wanted to share their finds for women looking to keep within a budget yet still look amazing.

Where To Spend, Where To Save

Establishing the fundamental base of the outfit was easy.

A classic lightweight Ivory Shirt Dress; the perfect throw on and the go-to piece for dressing in warmer weather.

If searching for an elegant piece to work throughout the year, we spotted our ‘Spend’ – a silk Eileen Fisher Shirt Dress with tie-up waist.

Alternatively, for a quick warm weather solution our ‘Save’- a Satin Rodeo Shirt Dress is from Topshop.

We adore both options; there’s no harm in owning two classics are there?

Then there are the shoes.

A black mule still has our heart. There are so many variations to the slip on. Invest in the iconic Gucci Loafer Mule or get the look for less with a Topshop alternative.

Lastly, for the accessories. We paired the look with a straw bag and gold hooped earrings. Straw bags are everywhere at the moment and bring fun personality to an outfit. It’s a trend that you can dip into lightly with a purse-friendly Circle Basket. Or, if like us you like to commit to a new handbag, we’re crushing on this picnic-perfect Kate Spade.

It becomes an exciting mission to find the best ‘Spend’ v ‘Save’ alternatives. We’re on to the next styling options, we can’t wait to show you what we come up with.

How I love these sorts of dresses; I had many of them back in the late ’70s! They are making a comeback and the best colors are these light and airy hues. We are almost there, Vicki, basking under the sun!

Those dresses are great. I appreciate the sleeves, since I hate re-applying sun lotion.
The circle basket reminds me of the Kenyan sisal bags that were big in the ’90s.

I have never been unhappy when I spent $$$$$ on shoes, sunglasses, or umbrellas (well a good umbrella may be just $).

I went through a Ferragamo kick starting in 2006 and have more pairs than is fiscally prudent (into low double digits now). But, the first one was a loafer and I still wear it regularly. They finally re-issued it a few years ago and instead of kicking myself for not buying two when they were still making it, I bought the second pair and I use that when I want to be spiffy because the old pair is still a good shoe – just old.

In fact it also dawned on me that a spiffy loafer can be worn with black tights and a dress, no need to have high heels. I think it was when I saw a photo of Jackie O smartly dressed in a dress and black hose and smart coat, and wearing flat Gucci loafers: light bulb on.
