Classic works well, with a twist is even better.
A shirtdress can be so-so and a shirtdress can be fabulous.
The success of this dress comes down to the cut, the generosity of fabric and length and the way we style them.
My ideal dress is slim fitting to the waist, cinched in and then fuller towards mid-length. Depending on my mood I will button up the collar or leave a couple open and add in a necklace, think June Cleaver in “Leave It To Beaver“. This whole look is very much inspired by the fashion of the late 50’s and early 60’s.
Accessories include a cardigan and kitten heels, mules or ballerina flats. Are you picturing my inspiration?
When looking through the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, my thoughts turn to dresses not only because they are excellent value at sale time but also because they are a simple way to dress well. Wearing a dress and especially this style of a shirtdress makes decision making simple. Like the lace dress, a shirtdress is flattering to most, suits many situations and can look extremely up to the minute if worked in the right way.
I also do the sneaker thing with this style of dress too; they are the best way if my day is about running here and there.
Let’s do another This Goes With That.
Try the pinstripes with everything.
This shirtdress is a keeper.
I am jealous of the access US readers have to this Anniversary sale. Nordstrom offers so many brilliant brands we don’t have access to in Europe. Even though it takes me longer and I don’t have the luxury of same day service or popping into my local, I shop here and especially at sale time.
This dress caused me great confusion; tempted by the red, ordered the plaid and now contemplating the pinstripes. I’m even thinking pinstripes, plaid blazer and leopard ballerinas for a very quirky day.
I think if my mood allows it will work. xv
