Weekend Wardrobe: Back To Basics

Weekend Wardrobe: Back To Basics on vickiarcher.com

Usually, I never want to think about the basics.

They should be a given but in this case, I forgot.

Packing for this long weekend away in the English countryside – think long hikes on the moor, pub lunches and long lazy dinners- meant my travel bag held some unlikely partners; practicality for our long walks and dressing-up for our evenings. There is one piece I could use for both and as I riffled through my cupboards in the last minute rush I found my silk tee shirts.

Silk tees, both long and short sleeved, are the best and most practical of wardrobe essentials; I had forgotten about them. Once upon a time, I wore them nearly every day – on their own or underneath a sweater or with a blazer. This weekend they can keep me cosy alongside the comfort of walking gear and double up with my jeans and jacket for tonight. There is something about the silk, the softness, to give them a slightly dressier appeal and allow them to bridge the style gap.

These silk tees are a ‘basic” but very happy re-discovery for the weekend wardrobe. xv

And when woman of any age can wear the basics so well, then who needs all the fancy embellishments? I’ll take this look any day, and I just may have to say, on Fridays, where the classroom setting will be more on the casual side. I need a blazer, that’s for sure!

I agree 100%, Mumbai. I am a basics woman all the way. In the case of many women that I see today, the clothes are wearing them rather than the other way around. Some of us no longer bother to wear things that truly flatter us. It’s become a free for all. I guess that’s fine if we want to be PC about it, but in fact I see a lot of unflattering looks out there. I don’t care much about trends. I care about what looks good on me and that means simple, perfectly fitted, streamlined, generally solid, neutral and classic.

A classic reminder (at least for me) to buy a white silk T-shirt. Elegant but never over dressed, that’s what I like. Many years ago I
spent some days in Chewton Glenn. Is it close to Endsleigh?Have a fantastic weekend .

I wear a silk cami under cashmere and wool jumpers all winter here in Australia where it can get warm during the day. It always feels luxurious and soft. Silk is versatile and the coolest fabric for a hot, humid Brisbane summer. Silk Tees peeping through add lustrous contrast to wools- I love playing with textures.
