Beauty Detective: Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is a Skincare must-have.

The world of skincare often feels like a minefield and with many different serums, oils, cleansers and acids, it all starts to sound too much like lotions and potions.

With so many products out there, each offering different results and ingredients, working out the best skincare routine for us can be tricky.

When we know our skin type, the next step is developing a set of products we know will work wonders on our complexions.

Hyaluronic acid or HA is a skincare essential and should be included with our cleansing, toning and moisturising routine.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugary molecule in our skin’s structure and connective tissue; it helps to keep everything moisturised in order to stay in the right place.

Why Is It Important?

Hyaluronic acid can retain up to 1000 times its weight in water meaning it is the leader in the moisturisation game.

As skin ages, it starts to lose its natural ability to retain moisture by itself and Hyaluronic acid helps to combat this.

Can It Be Applied Topically?

Previously, HA molecules were too big to have any effects on the skin’s surface, however, scientists were able to create combinations with lower molecular weights that can sink into the skin whilst also moisturising the top layer.

The Products

Dr Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Serum is one of the most notable, and with good reason. It includes highly concentrated long and short-chain hyaluronic molecules for intense hydration.

Use a full pipette once or twice a day evenly across the face followed by a moisturiser.

Tata Harper’s Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer counts as a best of both worlds. Its weightless formula feels incredibly light on the skin but keeps complexions deeply hydrated.

Use 1 or 2 pumps morning and night after eye cream for the best results.

The Organic Pharmacy’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum targets fine lines but also hydrates and boosts elasticity.

Apply a full droplet every night after cleansing and toning.

Hyaluronic acid may just be the next best thing for our skincare routine. Who knew one tiny droplet could make the world of difference to our skin’s hydration levels.

Simple yet effective skincare? I’m in.

I agree that Hyaluronic Acid is a must. So is Retinol, in my experience (age 66 and skin is good-pics available on FB).
HOWEVER, one need not spend huge amounts of $$ to get some good products. The Ordinary has a very good Hyaluronic Acid for $6.50! There are also other good brands for less than $50.00….The Dr. Barbara Sturm may be quite good, but for $300.00? That’s a night or two in a decent hotel in Paris. Or Aix….

Thank you for mentioning the Ordinary it is an excellent line and its ingredients are equal to the products priced 100 times more.

Hello Vicki – I’m a “longtime” reader and sometime “writer of comments” of your blog site. Thank you for all your tips and advice for keeping us young and beautiful, no quotations this time. I love the photos you choose too give us both a visual pleasure and which are inspiring. Now, on with my question, do all hyaluronic acid products take the place of the serum step in face rituals or do we also apply serum unless the HA product adds serum with their product name?

Depending on the HA product.. but normally, I will use mine as a change from serum and in some cases use all… but I do like to rotate products as I find I get a better result… :)
