Can We Wear What Our Daughters Wear? #4 The Ear Cuff

Can we wear what our daughters wear?

The answer is yes and no.

Sometimes we can and at other times we really can’t. The clever solution is to adapt styles that younger women wear to suit us and to make them our own. I am aware for a very long time that my daughters can wear pieces in ways that I would never attempt.

This doesn’t defeat me, it inspires me to analyse the trends and the latest to see how I can work with them.

Fashion is a series of interpretations, in a way like Chinese whispers. Fashion starts with the atelier, with the designers and transports to the runway; then it filters out to the influencers, to the magazine editors and to the buyers. Collections are very often interpretations of the runway shows.

Observing what our daughters wear and how they dress can work the same; we can take elements of their flair and re-work it for ourselves. It is never that we want to look like them but we do wish to learn from them.

One such trend is earrings, or ear cuffs.

I see multiple piercings and ear cuffs on all the gorgeous young things. They look fabulous but it’s not for me. Primarily because I can’t bring myself to have any more piercings, the first was traumatic enough and secondly I’m not sure about such a bold statement.

I do want to go with the trend a little though.

Ever since I started wearing the Dior style double pearl earrings, I have felt more adventurous towards ear cuffs. Ear cuffs are a version of the drop style; the decorative aspect is apparent but the earring sits differently.

The ear cuff dresses the ear, rather than hanging from the lobe.

I wanted to find some pretty ear cuffs, delicate in style and that don’t overwhelm, that look en point but still feel elegant and classic; a pair to change up with the double pearls and to travel with. I have worn the double pearls almost everyday since I found them.

I am ready for a change and these crystal ear cuffs are just the thing. xv
