Cecil Beaton, The Bouvier Sisters And Tulle

lee radziwill, cecil beaton, this goes with that, vicki archer

Cecil Beaton knew how to take a portrait and one in particular I have always loved is this shot of the Bouvier sisters, Lee and Jacqueline.

And, they were wearing tulle.

I am so delighted with my tulle skirt and I spent some time last night deciding how I would layer it up. It is the most versatile piece and I see myself wearing this skirt in many different ways, from the serious to the playful. This skirt is a perfect addition to the travel wardrobe; tulle takes up little space and doesn’t crease that badly. Unexpected dinner plans, concert or theatre tickets and the tulle would be good to go.

I have worn tulle with a turtleneck and flats ( you may remember the portrait in My French Life ) and I have topped it with both a leather biker jacket and a schoolboy style blazer. Denim has also been part of the combination.

This season the stan smith sneakers or a pretty pair of pumps in combination with a tee shirt, white shirt or turtle neck and one of the jackets will accessorize the outfit. I might even throw my trench over the top when I am out and about.

A new piece should enhance the other key pieces in the wardrobe and the tulle skirt is a hard working addition… xv

Hi Vicki all I can say is Stunning… Love all of the above especially the Manolo sneakers and the turtleneck…perfection. The photograph well I keep going back to it Wow… Thank you for sharing beauty. Have a lovely weekend. Regards Esther from Sydney. PS love your taste in everything you choose.

Vicki, there are many videos online instructing one how to make a tulle skirt at home – but most look so voluminous, like tutus! I think one needs to look for the softer type of tulle which hangs heavier and closer to the body, your pick appears to be like that – especially for daytime wear – do you agree? Perhaps the stiffer type is OK for long evening gowns.
Hugs, Mary

I agree, Mary. I have the skirt and it falls beautifully… My days of “the full” are relegated to memory and I found this one to be a wonderful compromise. :)
