The country village and in particular the village pub are world-renowned in England.
Deservedly so.
The last few months have meant a few weekends in the countryside searching for a cottage – not for me but for my daughter and her new addition, Marloe. The truth is these quaint cottages and especially those in the Cotswold area too tempt me. She is looking for her version of Kate Winslet’s Rose Cottage in “The Holiday”. Imagine soft golden stonewalls with climbing roses and the palest dove grey painted door – I am sure you can already imagine.
Opening the front door and stepping down into a world of chintz and comfort is the antidote for a busy week in London. VIllage cottages have a don’t-mind-your-head– as you enter kind of vibe. They are so old fashioned, even with all the modern comforts offered today.
We have seen many adorable houses but not quite hers as yet.
This weekend it is another day of viewing with the delicious bonus of a pub lunch.
The village pubs are the best and the greedy girl in me could spend many days moving from lunch to tea to dinner. Travelling to London on vacation has to include a Cotswold getaway – even if it’s for the pub cuisine alone.
So I am planning what to wear.
I’m a lover of the countryside but I’m not really a country girl if you get my drift. A Barbour jacket, headscarf and plaid skirt won’t work in my world. I’m more of a chunky sweater or sweatshirt girl with a pair of leggings and a cosy jacket. Gumboots if required but normally walking boots or trainers are my go-to.
The sweatshirt, loose and slightly cocoon-like is great over leggings; I’m partial to my leather pair. Tuck a pretty silk scarf around the neck and a faux coat over the top and I’m set for the house hunting, the walking and the sticky date pudding.
This is my weekend, halfway countryside outfit. If I am staying in the city I will wear the same sweatshirt and pants but probably change the sneakers for dressier boots and the scarf for some jewellery. I might even wear a turtleneck with the leathers and the faux coat if I’m out and about in London.
This is an easy weekend outfit to wear pretty much anywhere; I am just lucky enough to be planning it around the English countryside tomorrow. xv
