Her Point Of View: Nicola de Burlet

Meet Nicola

Nicola and I have something very fun in common – we love chatting about beauty. We probably could talk about a great deal more but we haven’t got around to that yet. Beauty is one of those subjects that has a never-ending point of start and finish.

She and I met by over a business telephone conversation, immediately veered off piste and have been talking ever since. Forget work, we had too much else to discuss and had to meet.

Nicola knows so much about the beauty business, tells a great story and is the girl you feel like you have known forever. I could chat with her for hours, which is why I am excited to introduce her to you.

By the way, I will be trying all her beauty recommendations because she has seriously wonderful skin, not to mention stunning silver hair.

Here she is,

How would you describe yourself?

This was the hardest question!  I am still trying to figure it out I think…

My friends say fun & loyal. I just hope I am a good mum, daughter and friend! I am very straightforward, I can be bullish when challenged but I am fiercely loyal and trustworthy.  On the flipside I am eternal shopper – never satisfied!! I am also a massive 80’s music fan and Star Wars geek.

Tell us about your day-to-day life?

I have worked in fashion and beauty PR for most of my career and I started my own PR consultancy 2 years ago. I live near London with my husband and son. I am fanatical about brands, I love how they evolve, their stories, how they are all so different and yet similar.

Are you the woman you imagined you would become?

Definitely not!

What are the valuable life lessons you have all figured out?

Take nothing for granted, but trust that things will work out when they need to.

Don’t rush, take your time; life is fast and short, don’t make it more so.

Live your life for you, not through or for others – apart from that, I have absolutely no clue!

What do you like most about yourself? What do you like the least?

The fact I am so trusting … and the fact I am so trusting, my husband says I am truly gullible!

What do you like most about getting older? What do you like the least?

I used to get a lot of (unwanted) attention for the way I looked when I was young and I couldn’t handle it. I hid under big baggy men’s jumpers and wanted to fade into the background.

Now I am older, there is (of course) less attention in that way, but I feel I am able to be me. I feel more confident and with less of a need to prove myself.

What’s your favourite way to dress? Do you have a signature style?

Being freelance means less office attire, I am running around London a lot so it is all about chic, easy pieces now.

I definitely have a signature style – skinny cropped trousers, a leather jacket, cashmere jumper and trainers, which are often swapped for heels when required.

Do you have a beauty secret to share?

It is difficult to share just one.  I am a beauty PR and constantly spend time with incredibly talented people from my industry so I am picking up tips all of the time! “Cleanse, tone moisturise – repeat”

What are your 3 “top” can’t live without skin care products?

AURELIA Miracle Balm Cleanser – after a day in our wonderful capital city, this makes skin fresh and clean.

DR SEBAGH Serum Repair – the best serum of the lot, rich in hyaluronic acid.

NATURA BISSE  Cure Sheer Eye Cream – a celeb favourite. This has a bit of tint to it, it is perfect on a day when you want a bit of light cover.

What are your 3 “top” can’t live without make-up products?

This is constantly changing with the seasons, but at the moment :

DELILAH  Foundation in Shell – I am a foundation obsessive. Delilah is a British brand, which launched a few years ago.  The coverage can be built up easily depending on your needs and the result is always natural. I am super picky so it takes a great brand to get through my rigorous testing.

MAYBELLINE Khol Pencil in Chocolate – I like a nice soft kohl pencil and I use it liberally, this one is perfect.

GUERLAIN Terracotta Bronzing Powder in Light – this is an absolute must, a little dusting of this in the shape of a 3 around the forehead, eyes and chin line – and you are good to go.

What’s on the bucket list?

Las Vegas.

If you could change one thing in the past, what would you do differently?

Talk and listen more to my Dad.

What age do you feel right now?

Who would play you in a movie?

Kristin Scott Thomas, I love everything about her.

Good morning and pleased to meet you, Nicola! Here I am, being inspired by Vicki’s long hair, then I see you with your gorgeous short cut, and now I’m confused! Which look should I go after! Isn’t it wonderful to be the kind of women who have formed our views on life and ourselves, thanks to the many experiences accorded us? Each life victory and challenge is an opportunity to see the world a little different each time. Thank you for your inspiring story!

Stay with the length for a bit, Anita… and then back to short… Isn’t that the fun of it!

Hi Vicki, lovely to meet Nicola. I imagine you would have had a ‘spring’ in your step after meeting with her! Fun, very chic and vibrant huh? I raced through all Nicola’s ‘can’t live withouts’ and sadly, no moisturiser. I realise she would probably use a different product than one I would use due to age difference but I am wondering what are you currently using? I like to mix and change my products every 6-12 mths and have hit a bit of a wall and usually just go back to La Mer. Love it of course but do see the need to surprise the skin every now and then. Considering Darphin ‘Exquisage’ – your thoughts?

Yes to the Darphin… I really like their moisturisers.
Consider the Stimulskin range… it’s fabulous if you want a product with plenty of hydration.

I have found the inspiration in your friend Nicola to let my short-ish hair go silver. Thank you both!

New York……..NOT Las Vegas you will be disappointed!!!!!!
I would imagine you have been to New York with your business……SO, I may suggest Santa Fe, New Mexico!
I love these interviews!
I am interviewing a FRENCH WOMAN for my next AGELESS STYLE POST!
Although she lives in the USA!
