Silhouette Switch Up

There’s a new silhouette in town.

I adore dresses. Their practicality, versatility and simplicity have firmly secured their place in my wardrobe and forever in my heart and in the summer months, I find myself reaching for them even more.

When I thought I’d seen them all, I discovered a new silhouette, one that lacks the shape I usually go for. Step aside from the fitted, tailored and slimline and step towards the billowy, smocked and poofy.

Some may say they are unflattering – it depends on how and what we wear them with? Feeling free and liberated can make us feel more comfortable and comfort can only spark further inspiration. Clothing that doubles as a no-brainer creates a blank canvas for endless styling opportunities and this style is exactly that. Play around with myriad lengths, cuts and frills, the shape removes any pressure to conform, instead, giving control back to us, the wearer.

Having the option of a dress that chooses to make a statement in other ways is incredibly appealing. I don’t need to worry about highlighting anything, or even trying to hide something as the alternative shape and added details speak for themselves.

Although they do not cinch in at the waist or tailor the hips, its generous sizing can often allow the legs to appear slimmer in contrast and flatter in other ways, dissimilar to what we’d often regard as complimentary.

Style Notes

This new style is charming and fresh, slotting perfectly into the closet. Style them up or down, they give the best of both worlds.

Try a maxi length with minimal accessories and a simple mule.

The looser, longer shape will do the talking.

Pair sneakers with a shorter, more voluminous variety.

The chunkier, retro style will help balance the proportions.

For the evening, try a midi style with a heeled mule.

Steer clear of Mary-Jane straps to avoid the look appearing too childish. A mule will keep it sophisticated and fabulous.

Long live the smock, and say hello to my new best friend.
