Turmeric is a wonder spice.
I asked Lily all about why the hype for turmeric is so great.
Before I hand over to her, there is one element I will warn you about; the colour.
My first experience with turmeric was somewhat challenging. All I can say is the orange/yellow teeth stain, which took forever to remove, was not a pretty look. Fortunately 3 toothbrushes later, it wasn’t permanent. I must have become over excited and added to much of this wonder spice to the mix ;)
My tip is use a straw if turmeric is added to your juice.
The Top 5 Benefits Of Turmeric
Turmeric has been used medicinally in Ayurvedic practice for over 4000 years, however it’s active component curcumin has only recently been identified for the amazing health benefits.
Anti-inflammatory
Curcumin is responsible for turmeric’s potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
These anti-inflammatory properties have shown to be even more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs for those suffering from arthritis. The curcumin within turmeric has proven to act as an effective pain reliever in many pain related chronic conditions.
Heart Protective
Turmeric has also been shown to improve endothelial function (lining of the blood vessel). Endothelial dysfunction is a primary cause of heart disease, as a result of being unable to regulate blood pressure and clot blood properly.
Liver Support and Detoxification
By adding turmeric to your food, you can stimulate bile production and flow. Bile is a substance, which is necessary for transporting toxins away from the liver to be eliminated via the digestive tract.
Skin Glow
By adding a daily dose of turmeric to the diet, it is possible to improve inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea and even ageing
Research has shown that curcumin can stimulate cellular antioxidant defences within human skin fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are important cells when it comes to anti-ageing, as they are responsible for collagen and elastin production.
Brain Health
Curcumin has been shown to increase levels of a hormone called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor. Alzheimer’s disease, depression and many other common brain disorders are linked to decreased levels of this hormone.
Studies have shown that curcumin may be effective at delaying brain disease and age-related decreases in brain function.
