This Frank Gehry designed home in Malibu was originally an artist’s loft built in the late 60’s, early 70’s and is currently inhabited by Patrick Dempsey and his family.
I use the term “currently inhabited” because Patrick describes himself as a “caretaker” of the house and explains “You have to be very careful to nurture it and sustain it and hand it on to someone else eventually.” I love this philosophy, and the fact that he acknowledges how fortunate he is to live there.
As the house wasn’t really designed for a family, modifications were made and Patrick admits it was challenging trying to keep the balance right for the home. “You want it to be comfortable and you want it to be warm…this is a family home and we want it to be inviting and casual and relaxed so you’re not uptight about things.”
Modern homes can have a tendency to look fabulous but sterile, very much “less is more.” A quality design must fit the owner’s needs and I think, in this case, the transformation to family friendly home has been beautifully considered and superbly executed. xannabelle
