Home Is Where The Heart Is

Provence - Vicki Archer

Do you ever have one of those light bulb moments?

When something so obvious, something that every body else has understood aeons before… becomes clear.

As I was preparing our guest room the other day… filling it with flowers… hydrangeas from the garden… at that perfect stage… when the colours are mottled,  sepia-like and turning… I realised that one of my most happy and contented pastimes is when I am home making.

It’s never finished for me… there are always changes that I want to make… embellishments to add… Creating a home and the comfort that comes with it must be in my DNA because by now, at my age, I should be over it… finished with the playing.

That’s why I loved creating Le Petit Bijou so much… and even when the home is not mine… it is still a joy to be involved… Crazy really… considering the time and the headaches involved… but I’m thinking… once a homemaker, always a homemaker.

Every season in France I tell myself I am sitting back… breathing… no more additions… no re-shuffling of furniture and redesigning areas of the garden.

What did I do this summer?… All of those things and more… I couldn’t help myself… I might have an addiction…a good one at that.

I have always been a home body… ever since I was a little girl and the older I get the more I accept that we don’t really change very much… We display so many of the same characteristics in our adulthood as we did as children. I see it in myself and I am aware of it with my own children. I also believe that we follow the patterns of our families… my mother was a homemaker… I am… and now my children are wanting to create their own homes with the same enthusiasm.

Homemaking comes from within… it’s not about what you have or how much of it… it stems from a desire to create ambience, to celebrate the senses, to be surrounded by comfort and to luxuriate in beauty. It’s a generous past time… it means time, effort and giving of your best.

Home is where the heart is… that’s what I’m thinking… Do you feel the same?  xv
