Have you seen the film, Dior and I?
Travelling, especially when there are many hours to lose, is the perfect opportunity to catch up on promised viewing. If you haven’t watched Dior and I, don’t wait to find those lazy hours, make time soon.
It is a film I could watch over and over.
Dior and I is a film not only about extravagant fashion but also about the emotion that fuels haute couture. I did not properly appreciate the history in the ateliers and the workmanship required to create these masterpieces.
These pieces are true works of art; the artisans who make them give blood, sweat and tears to the collection not to mention their heart and soul. The designer who conceptualises and is the star of the finale, is simply a part of the wonder of haute couture.
That is the beauty of Dior and I; the team has equal billing.
Dior and I, using original quotes, brings Monsieur Dior back to life and illustrates the responsibility facing Raf Simons to stay true yet make his own mark as creative director. It is a daunting role and one that he has assumed quietly and without pomp. The film bores deeply into his design process and the pressure he faces to complete his first collection.
Raf Simons would seem to start from the point of femininity. He reveres shape and form; he is a master of embellishment. There is a romance and an extravagance to his method as he re-interprets fashion history and leads the house of Dior forwards. His re-working of Dior’s most famous silhouettes, the A line and the Bar jacket is superb.
I was mesmerized with his visual tricks. How could the slightest tuck, the merest pinch of fabric make all the difference?
To wear haute couture Dior is a dream for most women.
The film enables us to look inside a priviledged world. I did not feel jaded by such lavishness and excess, I was moved. I loved the insight into a unique side of Paris, I felt for the men and women who have devoted much of their lives to couture and my sentimental side wept for the sheer beauty.
Don’t miss this one… xv
