Katharine Hepburn was flat out fabulous. Wasn’t she?
Katharine Hepburn was a woman comfortable in her personal style and she looked wonderful expressing it. From what I can remember, she wore the same type of clothing and dressed in the same way all throughout her life. Her early photographs and those taken later in life prove to me how individual style can work throughout any age.
“If You obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.”
I think she was on to something and especially when it comes to fashion.
She knew exactly how to turn the masculine into the feminine and nobody wore a pair of trousers like she did. Katharine Hepburn looked so right in trousers. I read somewhere, the first time Spencer Tracey met her he didn’t like her trousers at all; obviously he grew to love them.
Katharine Hepburn made the practical, elegant and the middle of the road glamorous. What she did for the humble white shirt and a classic “man style” pinstripe still resonates today. When I want to finesse some tailoring, find inspiration in the “classic with a twist” she is my go-to girl.
Do you know what else she did brilliantly?
She wore flats beautifully. She was literally “flat out fabulous”.
She understood wedges and how they can add height and be supremely comfortable, she made men’s lace-ups look sexy and as for the loafer, it would seem Katharine Hepburn and her loafers were inseparable.

With fashion, what goes around comes around.
There is nothing much we haven’t seen before and there is no trend like an old trend.
When I am putting together outfits and a “look” for the season I take great inspiration from the past. I look at the latest campaigns, decipher the trends and then work backwards. If I don’t quite know how I could wear something I search in the archives and find ideas.
As this is the season for flats and wedges I was reminded of my pin up, Katharine Hepburn. I researched photograph upon photograph and was even more impressed on closer inspection. She wore them well.
