All Grown Up In Cashmere: Wearing The Unstructured Cardigan

cashmere, mary-kate and ashley olson, vicki archer

These two, child celebrity sensations are all grown up and wearing cashmere.

Thinking on the question of beauty, women and age had me pondering style and the younger generation.

I don’t generally look to younger women for style inspiration, I prefer the elegance of older women and the way they put it all together. It is not only because I am mature but also because I have always veered towards the classic-with-a-twist way of dressing. That takes maturity and experience to perfect.

Then I thought of the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Nothing has surprised me more than their beautifully designed The Row fashion label. The Row is about simplicity of style and colour where monochrome is key and shapes are fluid. Their accessories are superb and long-time keepers. The only downside is the price.

Every season I look at their collection and am reminded these child stars have grown up and are designing with such elegance. One piece they perfect season after season is the unstructured cashmere cardigan.

The ‘big’ cardigan is a weekend piece for me or to be worn on a casual day where cosy and comfort is key.

I’m adding the unstructured cardigan to my wardrobe this winter, in neutrals.

I like them worn with jeans or over a simple dress; the longer line cardigan is less structured than a blazer and the length is a bonus for the hips. The key to wearing this well is the shape and the pieces they are accessorised with. I prefer the more generous cuts and the length to finish at mid thigh. Long and straight cardigans are much more difficult to wear and run the risk of looking dowdy.

We don’t want that, xv.
