More often than not my mood swings trigger what I wear.
There seems to be a direct correlation between how we feel about ourselves and what we wear. When we feel ill or overweight, underweight or down in the dumps we lose our creative mojo. This manifests in the way we dress.
It all comes back to confidence. Confidence swings and plummets depending on the happenings in our everyday lives. Confidence is an erratic quality; sometimes we have full support and at other times confidence can totally disappear.
When I feel happy, bright and sparky it is reflected in what I wear; if I am all gloom and doom, then so often are my clothes. Well not doom and gloom exactly, more like the personality and individuality take a back seat. I revert to “comfort” dressing which in my case is the safe, tried and tested. Or that favourite fall-back and irrational female position, “I have nothing to wear”.
It’s true to a certain extent; I have zero that matches my mood.
You know that feeling.
When the mood dips, the new dress that is slightly edgier and more figure enhancing or those heels that are that bit higher are tried on and rejected in favour of the more familiar; the pieces that draw less attention. When we feel totally in tune and all is going our way then our fashion confidence leaps to the front and our style gets that rejuvenation and sparkle it needs.
Last week, struggling with a cold, I realised how much dress and moods are interlinked.
For all the pretty in the closet I could have chosen, I stayed safe. I didn’t have that instinct to dress up, to put my fashion sense out there. I wanted to stay invisible and my style reflected that.
So how to we break the cycle?
How do we invigorate our style when we have lost our pep?
Most important is to re-find the confidence, the healthiness and the wellbeing.
We need to identify why our mood has changed and what is causing the down swing. Once we do then we can take steps to pick up and make it back on top again.
In the meantime, because we all have our lows and it is naive to believe we won’t, I have decided to be easy on myself. It’s not possible to be perfect everyday, as much as we would like to be. What I am going to do is find a compromise.
When I don’t feel like making the extra effort, I will meet my mood halfway. I will wear my basic black but I will add red lipstick and lashings of mascara even if I want to be pale and wan.
My leather pixies, my most comfortable pants of all time and my black turtleneck will see me through.
Do your moods reflect how you dress? xv
