Moules and frites are a favourite French dish, simple, non fussy and scrumptious and best washed down with a beer or a glass of chilled rosé wine.
I was recently introduced to the brasserie, Du Nord au Sud in the town of Beaucaire, about 30 minutes from St Remy de Provence. Beaucaire sits beside the river Rhone with its twin town, Tarascon and is distinguished by a waterway of pleasure boats.
This town is not on the tourist map but the brasserie should be – it is well known for and serves the most excellent moules and frites.
The mussels, steamed in a broth of your choice (cream, cream and garlic, tomato or white wine and onion) are served in large individual cooking pots with a generous helping of hand made pommes frites to soak up the sauce.
It is not the brasserie to visit for a fine dining experience nor is the town of Beaucaire a highlight for the perfect Provencal tour but if you don’t mind experiencing true local flavour and you enjoy messy eating with a good plate of fries then this is the place… xv
