The Female Imagination: In My Dreams

Female Imagination, A New Way of Thinking vickiarcher.com

The female imagination is a wonderful thing.

  • No limits and no bounds, especially when it comes to fashion.

  • When I saw this past show my mind immediately went into overdrive and imagined how fun it would be to walk the aisles of a designer supermarket, throw with abandon exquisite items into the trolley, scan and check out and then play dress ups at home. The practicalities would not count; the price and the fit mere irrelevancies in my wildest fancy. We could all strut the aisles; we would be glamazons on a mission.

  • And then there is real life.

  • Fashion is not a supermarket line in most cases and designers create beautiful architectural spaces for us to shop at leisure. Even digital shopping is a curated experience these days. As online clicking takes over the world it becomes even more important for brands to be distinctive, to show their excellence and to have a physical representation of that.

  • But what if we did, for one moment, submit to a different style shopping mentality?
  • Not exactly supermarket, but what if we styled ourselves with more abandon?
  • What if we selected our fashion with a little less control and a bit more joie de vivre.

I am not suggesting a lack of prudence or throwing away what we know works nor am I wanting to sack our long developed personal style. Why not every now and then take a risk? We should search and discover new designers or try on styles we once rejected. Time can change all and perhaps our mind-sets are different and our physical shape not the same; we may be in a very different place and yet locked firmly into habits from way back.

I tend towards the same old same old; I am too comfortable with that.

I don’t want to change my sense of style but I would like to inject a bit more passion, an element of surprise. The summer is coming and the designers are showing colour and patterns that should not be dismissed. I’m not going to ditch the black but I want to find a floral or two to lighten me up. Some colour would add a smile and a little whimsy in the accessory department wouldn’t hurt either.

  • With this new mentality in mind I decided to become more familiar with unfamiliar designers and to fill my “shopping basket” on impulse. I am endeavouring to trust my first instincts and not ponder and revert to the safe.

  • I won’t wear trends I don’t think suit or are inappropriate for my age but I will adapt and be more flexible.

  • I have spent several hours (ok, maybe a bit more) this morning on Nordstrom’s new Designer section, Here +Now, Cutting-Edge Collections and I think their buyers must have read my mind.
  • I love their edit and their endorsement of creative young talent. It is so refreshing to see new brands making innovative pieces and we can draw inspiration from these beautiful collections.

This is what I want to be wearing, some new additions in my basket. They are impulsive and non-planned but I’m feeling they will fit right on in, xv.
