The Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca is a world unto itself.
Last week I had the pleasure of their company for 6 days; invited for two and stayed for six. Talk about overstaying my welcome.
I want to tell you that the decor was fabulous, the Italian restaurant Locanda Verde too tempting and the beds feather soft; the interiors are wonderful, the food so tempting and the bed was heaven. The location downtown is a dream; quiet, residential but within walking distance to the entire buzz. The Greenwich is also celebrity central, which was lost on me because I never recognize anyone. Apparently I missed Bradley Cooper, Ellen Pompeo and Adele; I should have been wearing my glasses.
What I really want to tell you about is the ambience, the atmosphere and the service.
I have never stayed anywhere that made me feel so welcome, so comfortable and so at home. There was something seriously special about The Greenwich Hotel. Nothing was ever too much trouble.
My daughters flew to New York to surprise me for a long weekend; the hotel welcomed them with open arms, changed my room around and found us a bigger room where we could all bunk in. No fuss, no extras just genuinely happy to please. The two reception rooms, especially the large drawing room with fireplace was particularly welcoming.
It was like entertaining in my own home; they made my guests feel equally spoilt and looked after. For meetings I never had to venture further than the cosy fireplace. And besides, they served my favourite jasmine tea from Dammann Frères. They were winning.
I admit to being spoilt and staying in many beautiful hotels over the years.
The Greenwich is more like a private club; it is discreet, not overly showy or opulent. Many establishments boast the thread count of their sheets, the amount of feathers in their pillows and the luxury products on hand to pamper. At the Greenwich, comfort is certain but it is not what sets this hotel apart. And nor is it the bottomless sweets and treats that are replenished daily at no extra cost; you might understand that their generosity was my downfall. If I hadn’t understood the attraction of the Tootsie Roll before now, let’s just say I am a convert.
The Greenwich Hotel is special because of the people; an abundance of gorgeous young things with bright smiles and willing attitudes. It is a home away from home in a busy, busy metropolis. The thought of coming back to such a haven makes travelling and being away that much easier.
Sadly I didn’t try the pool or have time for any treatments at their award-winning spa; the daughters tested it out and raved. I was too quick to be out and about in what was a week of the most incredible cobalt-sky days. The spa will be my excuse for another visit.
Not that I would ever need one.
Thank you Mr De Niro for a truly fabulous week; you really have got it right.
