Slip On, Lace Up: A Symphony Of Sneakers

converse, chuck taylor, vicki archer

There is a symphony of sneakers in my wardrobe. Sneaker protocol has changed and one pair no longer seems enough.

Sneakers are having their moment. I remember one slightly pair of scruffy Converse that I would bring out from time to time when I could no longer face squished feet and aching toes. Now I co-ordinate the sneakers with the outfit. I like the whites with the dark and the darks with the white.

I wear sneakers pretty much every day with every style of clothing. I don’t save them for the weekends, to wear with jeans or for travelling, I live in them. I love them most with tailored clothes, especially with a suit.

Recently I was asked if slip on sneakers were still as popular. I believe so and I wear mine often. The chunky sole looks great with a capri or cropped pant. I haven’t mastered the art of the ankle sock with them as yet, although I know it’s being worn. I am a bare ankle girl; one of those personal foibles that I can’t help but follow.

Sneakers are individual, everyone has favourite brands, certain styles that are them.

Every well stocked wardrobe needs a pair or two of slip ons and a Converse or two.

Non negotiable I believe.

It’s not that I don’t love my Stan Smith’s, wear to death my New Balance and work out in my Nikes; I want to mix them up, to go crazy with this fashion while it lasts. Nordstrom has all the sneakers you could dream of, a million styles and so many fabulous colours and yet I still want to wear mine in monochrome.

When Nordstrom asked me to choose my favourite sneakers I was all set to brighten up, to lighten up and yet here I am, ever practical.

I adore the Missoni take for Converse and those Steve Madden hightops. I can’t live without my slip ons in black or white and I have lost count of the plain black and white Converse that have graced my cupboards over the years. My sneakers may not be rock n roll choices but they are simple, modern and strangely enough, elegant.

Adapting to fashion is what we are about, isn’t it? xv
