What to wear with the lace-ups?
I’m starting with a black midi skirt because it is an easy win.
Style the skirt with an oversized sweater, a tee or a classic man shirt tucked in if your waist is forgiving. The midi skirt is one of those wardrobe pieces without hanger appeal; it is one to forget. The midi gets pushed to the back of the closet and neglected more often than not. I know I do. I see it, slide it along, pull it back and then push it further because I forget how great it can really look.
Wearing a skirt does require more thought than a dress – true – but as a season turns and layers are more and more vital, it is a winner. I like a bias cut and I love a pleat; I also think an A-line can look very beautiful with a classic blouse and a pair of lace-ups.
Let’s start with the skirt.
I’m looking for a black midi because it can be the base for many outfits but a tweed, tartan or check can look equally wonderful. Maybe even a caramel with the black lace-ups? Caramel is one of those shades I admire on others but find it hard to wear.
If your shape is fuller around the middle, don’t dismiss the skirt – wear a longer line blouse and /or jacket in a complementary colour; work with the texture or add a pinstripe or check.
If a waist is your winner, tuck in the blouse, try a tailored jacket or cropped style and emphasise your luck.
This will be one of my go-everywhere outfits this season; I just know it. xv
