Clear bright eyes?
As much as holidays are about rest and relaxation they can also mean a little extra “fun” and lack of sleep. Before I left for our Greek getaway I asked Lily for some easy ways to keep eyes shiny and bright.
Eye health is something I am aware of, my mother has suffered from macular degeneration for many years and truthfully it’s one of those senses we need to be vigilant over. It never hurts to be reminded of the natural ways we can look after ourselves. As well informed as we are, it is easy to lose track sometimes.
Here are the top 6 foods to keep eyes healthy and vision sharp.
Eating well for eyesight not only leads to sparkling, clear bright eyes, but can also be a great way to help protect against vision problems.
6 Ways To Clear Bright Eyes
Carrots
Carrots really are a no.1 essential food for the eyes.
Carrots contain beta-carotene in abundance, an antioxidant that gives them their characteristic bright orange colour. Beta-carotene is the precursor for vitamin A, a nutrient so essential for eye health that deficiencies can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration.
Blueberries
Blueberries are rich in plant antioxidants called anthocyanins and vitamin C.
Both these antioxidants can protect against damage to the eye from harmful free radicals coming from pollution, smoke, and sunlight.
Blackcurrant Seed Oil
Blackcurrant seed oil is an amazing source of essential fats called gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).
GLA is particularly important for dry eyes as it can increase an anti-inflammatory hormone called prostaglandin E1 that supports normal tear function.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are a top source of lycopene, an antioxidant that gives them their vibrant red hue.
A recent study has shown that high blood levels of lycopene can halve the risk of developing macular degeneration.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are extremely high in zinc.
This mineral is essential for maintaining eye health by protecting the ocular tissue from age-related wear and tear.
Oily Fish
Oily fish is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, and since the retina of our eye is mainly composed of omega 3 fats, optimal intake is vital.
Fish oils have been shown to prevent dry eyes by reducing inflammation, altering fat profiles of oil glands lining the eyelids and stimulating tear secretion.
Aim to consume 2-3 portions of wild salmon, fresh tuna, mackerel, herring, sardines and anchovies weekly.
