A Provencal Vignette

‘a provencal vignette’

May in Provence and the roses are blooming madly. I say this every year but I think they have excelled themselves this time. Our standard white icebergs are so abundant that from a distance they look like a Flokati carpet thrown down on the lawn… and the climbers are wrapping the cyprus trees and reaching as high as they can for the sky.

Last weekend I took a bunch to some favourite friends who were celebrating a special wedding anniversary. This girl loves, loves, loves roses and has an incredible touch when it comes to styling. Her eye is sharp and her taste superb. She quickly found the gorgeous old pail pictured above… arranged the flowers… and created the ‘scene’ within minutes. The placement of the tin objects together on the terracotta floor, with the roses and the touch of vintage toile curtain against the stone walls, looked so pretty… And look at the sweet little light placed on the edge of the drum… in the evening a spot can highlight the roses… This vignette made me realise it’s important to think ‘outside the box’… Why do I always place my flowers on the tables in the same places?  From now on I am on the lookout for unusual vases… and I am going to start ‘creating scenes’ rather than ‘filling gaps’… xv

Almost as pretty as the vintage one… and much easier to find

Galvanised steel pail… perfect for long stemmed roses

Square pails… imagine these placed ‘vignette’ style… or these rectangular ones

or for a wilder country style look… an oval steel tub

and if you feel like you need more interior inspiration and want to be spoilt on this long weekend

The Houses of Verandah… a feast on every page
