It’s Anniversary time again.
There are only two sales that really grab my attention during the year, the Anniversary Sale and the Black Friday bonanzas. “Sales” can be an oxymoron and more trouble than they are worth. A genuine bargain is the best deal of all but it is easy to make bad choices in the rush to save money. At least I do. If the number of returns going back from here is anything to go by then I should avoid most sales.
Why do I ever think a piece will work if it is reduced when it didn’t look any good at full price? I am the eternal optimist.
So, I must stick to what I know during sale time and what I know works in my wardrobe.
One of these pieces is the topcoat.
By topcoat I mean a simple overcoat, not too heavy and not too light to take me through autumn into winter days. It is a coat that is lengthening and that creates an elegant line. The topcoat is also one to dress up the very simple underneath – even the sport or yoga gear when required.
The topcoat has graduated from the conservative navy blue, greys and black to a rainbow of pastel and primary shades. I rather like the idea of a yellow topcoat over my penchant for all black.
(Imagine – straight black sheath dress, opaque tights and a cute pair of flats, topped with a ray of sunshine – I’m wearing this come autumn.)
Or why not wear tweed over denim or winter white? This doesn’t mean the charcoal grey does not tempt me.
The beauty of these coats is they aren’t a huge investment at sale prices and they make an impact in our wardrobe. In a way, they are similar to a blazer and we all know how much I love those.
Take a tour – I know some of these won’t be returned. xv
