Who doesn’t love a surprise?
I do and especially when I am shopping. An added bonus always sweetens the deal.
The French were way ahead when it came to sharing samples of make-up and skincare products. My early trips to Paris were a wonder to me; I would come away from the beauty counter with a bag full of delicious samples to try and savour over time. Like all good marketing – it worked – and more often than not I would return to purchase.
The rest of the world has caught up and now a “gift with purchase” is often the case.
I love them. Why?
Not only because a surprise is always a treat and not only because it is advantageous to try before we buy, but because gift size samples make brilliant travelling companions. I don’t check-in luggage very often and regular sizes are a problem with the rules of security; forget decanting all of my products, it’s never going to happen.
Learning from the French shopping experiences, I often use the samples to create my own “gifts with gifts”. This Christmas I will make my girls their own individual “sample bags” to add in their stockings. Small sizes are not simply cute and an easy way to experience more of a favourite brand, they are so practical.
Black Friday week is the week to source the best gifts with purchase. Why not stock up the beauty cupboard with our tried and true favourites and save the “gifts” for later? This year Nordstrom has so many beauty and skincare giveaways. Most of the skincare I have talked about during the year has a special offer this weekend. I am particularly interested in the Darphin, Maria Bardescu, Sunday Riley and Mascara offers.
My choices are a mix of what I want to stock up on and the extras are a bonus and what I know I want to try. One of the most beautiful fragrances, Fleur d’Oranger by Serge Lutens has three extra fragrances to try; two I already love and the third I would love to try.
When I experience a new perfume I need time to know if it’s for me. This one, although it’s been left aside for a year or two as I flirt with other scents, has always had a special place. xv
