They just work. Right?
It’s that time of year when I assess my espadrille situation because I want to feel holiday/summer ready. They have always been my shoes of choice for long lazy summer holidays or simply long lazy days. I love the way they look, the right pair is supremely comfortable and they give a simple caftan or pair of Capri pants an added edge.
Sandals are tricky because feet are tricky and not every pair of sandal is flattering. Sandals can look awful, sloppy and very unattractive; they can also look beautiful and stylish. Espadrilles are one of those shoes that suit pretty much everyone and don’t accentuate the feet.
Like all things, there are espadrilles and espadrilles.
There are a couple of elements to consider:
To tie up with an ankle strap or not?
Whether to wear a wedge heel or stay flat?
A wedge heel and an ankle strap is my favourite. I like the ties up the leg on others but for me, I stay simple.
The very flat espadrille with a back is difficult to walk in so if I want flat, I wear a mule. They are easier to walk in and far more comfortable for me. The flat style with a back always ends up like a mule so from now on I’m wearing these.
One of my fall-back summer outfits, when a caftan won’t do, is black capris, tee shirt in black or white and a pair of wedge espadrilles; the espadrilles immediately make this classic look relaxed. With a dress, like the one pictured and this, they are perfect.
